CRITERION GAMES

FEELING THE RUSH

First off I have to say that you guys are just amazing. BLACK and the Burnout series are some of the best games I have ever played. Both games give you a great sense of power. I just love the feeling of when you slam on the boost and explode from 0 to 200 in less than 3 seconds! I am a long time racing fan and before Burnout the last great car racing game I had played was the Rush series back on the N64.

I like to think that Burnout is the Rush of its Generation (that is a compliment). It's just that once I played Rush no other racing game felt fast enough...until Burnout. Now, after I've played Burnout nothing comes even close. It makes all other racing games slow and boring.

Burnout is the best racing game ever! Great visuals. Great sound. Great fun. And that goes for both BLACK and Burnout. I just have one plea...don't let Burnout die after Paradise. Keep making them. Keep making them more violent and explosive! You guys need to stick around and keep making awesome games!

GREAT JOB CRITERION!

A Hardcore Fan,
Blaine Boule

Dear Blaine,

Thank for mailing us here at Criterion. We read all of the emails that are sent to us. Thanks for your comments, glad to hear you enjoy the game. A lot of us were big 'Rush' fans too back in the day. Also big 'Hydro Thunder' fans too.

Thanks for your comments and I hope you like our new stuff too.

B2 TUNES?

Hi there,

The 'Burnout 2: Point of Impact' audio is some of the best music for a game I've listened to in a long time. If I'm honest I've not played many games with great music since. I recently bought 'Burnout Dominator' too, and I fell into a false sense of excitement when a remixed version of the main tune was played. Unfortunately most of the music after that, (on the playlists, provided by EA as I remember. But thats another story...) weren't as good. I don't know what you had planned for the new releases, but I would love to see the original score in there once again.

Which brings me on to a new point. I looked for the soundtrack CD of Burnout 2 (because I'm obsessed with those catchy tunes), and was gutted to find none was released. I was hoping you could shed some light on this for me. Why haven't you done so with this particular game in the series? And maybe, if I beg hard enough, would you release one for me?

Anyway. Thank you for reading my letter.

Jake Mackie

P.S. No matter how much EA pester. Say 'No' to 'Burger King' Adverts.

Dear Jake,

Thanks for writing us. At present, there are no plans for us to release the music from Burnout 2. But stay tuned, we might be able to do it sometime soon.

We like the original Burnout theme that we did for B2, which is why we included it for the Xbox 360 release of Burnout Revenge, and then it was spectacularly remixed and reborn for the release of Burnout Dominator.

There was an original score produced for Burnout 3: Takedown too, but it has never been heard outside of Criterion. Perhaps one day we will make it available....

CRASH SITE

May I start off by saying Burnout Revenge is the best game I have ever played. I am longing for the next game to come out and everyone I play with is saying the same thing.

The reason I am writing to you is that there is a website related to crashing and the people on the forum would love to get some up and coming news concerning the release date and any other things relating to your game.

The website is www.burnoutcrash.com

It was set up as a guide to everyone on how to crash at each junction and how to improve your crash scores.

The interest in your game is still there as I'm sure you're aware, so any input into this site would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for the game and I can't wait till the next one gets released.

Ken Reid

Dear Ken,

Thank for telling us about your site. We're currently building a fan site page and will include your link if you don't mind.

It's pretty busy for us right now as we prepare the game for the E3 trade show in Los Angeles next week. A lot more information about the new game will be released then.

DENIED BY DOMINATOR

I just wanted to tell you that I ran out to get my new copy of Burnout Dominator (for $50 + taxes, which are high in BC), and raced home to slam it in my PS2, only to find that my fave modes are GONE: Traffic Attack and Crash. Not only that, but what's the deal in not being able to smash traffic in the other modes? That was what Burnout Revenge was all about and it was the best game ever! I really hoped that Dominator would have even more, but to cut it ALL out?? It's just another race game now. I will NOT be buying the next one. I feel cheated. Just wanted you to know.

S. White

Dear Mr "S"

Sorry to hear that you feel cheated. It was a deliberate decision not to include Crash Mode in Dominator. We wanted to return to a more pure Burnout 2 style game for that release.

However, Crash Mode has been born again and will feature in Burnout Paradise.

Thanks for writing in though.

ON THE BLACK BURNER

I was reading your replies to some people who had written in about BLACK 2 and was amazed that this isn't a foregone conclusion.

Why isn't BLACK 2 done already?

BLACK was on it's way to toppling the big guys like Rainbow Six, GRAW, Gears or War, etc. It won plenty of awards and anyone you talk to loves the game. The only negative you will hear is that it wasn't playable on XBOX Live (big deal), it was a little short (what game isn't), and THE SEQUEL ISN'T OUT YET!!!! (No excuse.)

Come on BLACK TEAM it is long overdue—announce BLACK for the next generation consoles already!!!!

Dimitri

Dear Dmitri,

We hear you. We enjoyed making BLACK too. But you should not automatically assume that we're ready with the sequel. The honest answer is we're not.

We're all hard at work completing work on Burnout Paradise.

Once that is done, we might make something new before we make a sequel to BLACK. It IS something we want to do, we just don't have a plan to do it right away.

Regards

LOOKING FOR LENNOX

Alright Guys,

I went to your site and saw that you had won a ton of awards for making BLACK as awesome as you did.

Very well deserved rewards I might add.

What I want to know is—when am I going to get to hunt down that F*@$*ing low life Lennox?

I WANT HIS ASS ON A PLATTER!

Please tell me your working on part II.

And if you are, please don't mess with perfection. Why fix what isn't broken?

Thanks for an awesome game.

Todd M

Dear Todd,

Thanks for writing in to us. As you might have already read, we're not currently developing a sequel to BLACK, but it's definitely something we want to do in the future. As to Mr. Lennox, I do happen to know his current whereabouts. I believe he has made several attempts to enter the United States to locate his daughter...

SYNDICATION SOON

BANG!, and as the first bullet flies destroying a door, you know, you just have to finish BLACK. Well done Criterion, the destructible environments and particle effects are brilliant with sometimes only the flash of enemy gunfire to give you a target, but the highlights have to be non stop action and guns that combine to make you feel like Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The game could do with more levels and the ability to save checkpoints. Otherwise it is a great experience, a little short with the challenge of higher difficulties being more of a lure to replay it rather than the various hidden objectives.

Hopefully these and other surprise improvements will feature in BLACK 2, maybe even some vehicle driving and shooting—I'm really hoping here—but in the meantime could you add an RSS feed for the news on Criterion games like Burnout? Thanks for developing a great game and letting you know that I intend to go for the black guns next.

Roland Silver

Dear Roland,

Thanks for writing in to us. Glad to hear you have enjoyed playing the game. Good note about the RSS feeds, this is something we are planning to add to the site going forward.

BLACK IT UP

How you doin BLACK Team,

I am not that much of a video-game-addict but when I played BLACK on PS2, I have to say it's the best game I've ever played. The guns and the realistic environment makes it addictive unlike those games where you play against aliens and other unrealistic sci-fi figures. You won't believe this but when I bought a copy of this game, after playing it I bought 2 more in case the first one gets lost or gets scratched. Because after playing BLACK, the gameplays of other games of the same category don't seem appealing. And you can play it over and over again.

For BLACK 2 I hope you guys keep the weapons REAL, a smooth gameplay and the realistic environment. I don't know about other fans but I was hoping you guys put missions and strategies and story lines based on other places too like middle-east for example and not only USSR.

Can't wait for BLACK 2.

Good Luck people.
A Fan from Dubai.

Dear Mr. Fan,

Glad to hear you enjoyed the game. We know how you feel. The Middle East is certainly an interesting location. Maybe that type of setting could be very interesting for a future game.

REPEAT REQUEST

Dear Criterion,

BLACK is an incredible game. I bought it for PS2 and beat it three times. It has the most interesting and funny sound effects. For example, tossing a grenade into a room with an unsuspecting terrorist makes for a helpless "GRENADA" yell followed by him flying out of the room.

The in-game destructables are ingenious and make the game more fun. I have recently bought a XBOX 360 and I am sure that your company has recognized its next generation capability. I hope that you will make a sequel to the most awesome shooting game ever on the next gen consoles (XBOX 360 and PS3).

I would be the first to buy it.

Your fan,
Mike C.

Dear Mike,

Thanks again for writing in to us here at Criterion. We are always interested in hearing from fans who have enjoyed our work.

Yes, of course we are hard at work working on the PS3 and the 360. But as I am sure you have read already further up the page, a sequel to BLACK is not yet in development. If that changes, we'll let you know.

MISSING MANUAL

I just bought a used copy of BLACK from Blockbuster and it had no manual. Is there any way of getting a copy?

Arnold D.

Dear Arnold,

Maybe you left the instruction manual next to your Uzi 9mm?

Or is it next to your phased plasma rifle, the one with the forty watt range?

If not, send in your address, if we can find a spare manual lying around, we'll gladly send you one.
