BURNOUT DIY

Burnout Revenge on the XBOX 360 is great, and my friends and I play it constantly.

One thing we like doing is creating a race room where we all pick low riders and spend the entire length of the race slamming each other and taking each other out. Even though this is a core element of Burnout, our goal is not to finish but to cause utter chaos, to lay in wait in an alley or turn around and slam into each other head on. It's basically a rolling demolition derby.

Burnout's Road Rage is similar in that it's not so much the race as it is the hunt. But once you take the other drivers out, the game ends, and since one team IS trying to make it to the finish line alive, there isn't that all-out, in-your-face, royal beat-down element as with our low rider grudge matches, where we can smash and slam over and over. We actually get bummed when the finish line comes into view, and we try to shove each other over it since, in this case, finishing is the last thing any of us want to do.

We've gotten random strangers on XBOX Live to join in and they find it to be a nice spin to the already-great Burnout game variations.

Thanks for reading this... Keep up the good work.

Dear John,

Thanks for emailing The Burnout Team.

Glad to hear you enjoy the game online. We've certainly put a lot of time and effort into designing the different game modes.

The variation you like to play is quite common. We remember seeing a lot of lobbies designated as 'Takedowns Only' shortly after the release of the multi award-winning Burnout 3:Takedown.

Did we mention already that Burnout 3:Takedown is now backward compatible for your Xbox 360?

Oh, we just did. You can all thank the guys at Microsoft for working so hard to get another great game added to the list. The guys at Eurogamer were particularly excited to hear this news. Here's to hoping their gamer scores improve one day...

DOWNLOAD MY CLIP!

Hello,

I am writing about the after-crash screen on Xbox Live on Burnout Revenge for the Xbox 360 (the one that shows your car smashed after a crash before you resume racing). I have had numerous occasions where a fellow racer would be 0.5 miles behind me, only to have him 0.1 miles AHEAD of me when I come out of that screen, and eventually 0.5 Miles ahead before I could get a full head of steam with the car. I ask that you please shorten the time you are held in this screen, it can really become a pain.

Also, I ask that you please reset the top 20 downloads section at least 2-3 times a month, instead of the current 1 time a month. Many people simply download their clips as soon as it resets, leaving us legit downloaders unable to get into the top 20 and get the achievement.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Derek Steidle

Dear Derek,

Thanks for mailing The Burnout Team.

To answer your question, the reset happens each month on the 25th. Maybe that information will help you get the achievement. But our advice is simply to make a dynamite clip and give it a good title. That makes it much more likely that others will take a look.

Crashing is a delicate matter and as we answered last week, we have to make sure that we reset you in a safe place.

WHO CAN IDENTIFY THE MYSTERY GAMER ?

First off I wanna compliment you on a series of games that I have always loved, and look forward to the next incarnation.

Right, my question is, some time ago on Burnout Revenge on original Xbox, our room was graced with the presence of a gamer called "cgjin". The guy had a few races with us, but seemed more interested in what we thought of Burnout, and what could be improved, after a few races i asked the guy if he worked for you guys, then he left.

I thought the "cg" bit of the gamertag could stand for Criterion Games? Me and all my mates have always thought it was a Criterion guy, but we have no way of confirmation. Is there any way you could confirm if it was an employee or not?

You don't have to answer on the site if you don't wanna, but we would like to know. Keep up the excellent work people!

antz

Dear Mr. “Antz”

Thanks for mailing.

There is no-one on the team who uses that gamertag. Most of us play online every week, sometimes we identify ourselves, but mostly we don’t.

Maybe it was some competing developer trying to find out why players love our game and hate theirs? Could be!

I'VE BEEN DISCONNECTED!

Help please, I'm playing Burnout 3 again. I haven't played it in a while. I loaded my old profile but when I go to play multi-player, everything is unselectable except Crash Party. We used to play multi all the time but now there is something wrong.

Can you help?

D Mayo

Dear Mr Mayo,

Thanks for mailing.

Not sure how we can help you there. You don't say whether you're playing on XBox or PS2, but unless there's something wrong with your online configuration it sounds as if you have a corrupt profile. That sounds like a great excuse to start again from the beginning and play all the way through Takedown.

What a brilliant game that was! Did we mention that it will now run on your Xbox 360?

GAMECUBE B3—THE QUEST IS OVER

Is Burnout 3 available for Gamecube?

If so is there a way I can order it?

Practically impossible to find in my area.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

D Silver

Dear Mr. Silver,

Burnout 3:Takedown was never developed for Nintendo Gamecube. So there is no way you can order it and that is why it is impossible to find in ANY area, not just your own.

We have not developed for Nintendo hardware since Burnout 2: Point of Impact.

DRIFT JUMPING: THE FACTS

Hey Criterion,

I just had a few questions about Revenge on the 360... Maybe you can help answer some of them.

First of all, I was wondering if you consider drift jumping to be cheating or not. As you probably know, a lot of the top 1000 ranked racers use drift jumping to get their cars going past 209 MPH off jumps, and they can maintain this speed for a couple seconds coming off the jump. Is this a glitch, or did you guys intentionally put this technique in the game? It's a lot of fun to do and takes skill.

Also, are there any plans to have a tournament for Revenge someday? Or maybe the next Burnout? I've always wanted to be in a tournament even though I probably wouldn't win.

And my last question... Any plans to stop some of the "cheating" going on online? A bunch of the top 20 players got their ranks by setting up unbalanced road rage matches, giving their team 209 mph cars and the opposing team 160 mph cars, so that they get an easy win. Another problem is the people who only race people they know they can beat - for example, some of the racers in the top 20 will only race people outside of the top 100 range because they would lose rank if they played against other very good racers. When people do this, the ranking system doesn't work very well because some of the good racers have no chance of playing those ranked higher than them...

Anyway, thanks for taking a look at these questions... but Burnout 5 better be good... :-)

Vapor

Dear Mr. Vapor,

Thanks for mailing.

So, you ask about the so-called ‘drift jumping’ – was it intentional or just a glitch?

Well, with each Burnout we have put out, players from around the world have found all manner of quirks to exploit. Burnout 2 had quite a few.

It’s just a glitch, but it’s a fun one.

Do we consider it to be cheating?

Opinion is split on this one. Some do, some do not.

All we can say is that the ‘true’ Burnout Elite around here don’t need to rely on cheats or exploits to win…

Tournaments ?

We have not officially held any yet, but check around the web as we know a few different sites have held their own. We might decide to hold one later in the year, so check back to the site.

As we see you have experienced, the world of online gaming is a varied place. There will always be cheaters.

And there will always be lamers too.

BEAT IT WITH A STICK

I have played every Burnout game that you have made for Playstation 2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have just one suggestion for the new edition of Burnout for Xbox 360. PLEASE allow me to choose whether I want to have gas/brake located on the triggers or on the right joystick. You gave Playstation 2 owners this option, but when I played Burnout Revenge on the original Xbox there was no option like this at all. I even purchased Burnout Revenge a second time for the Xbox 360, and yet again there was no option to map the gas/brake to the right joystick. I would hope that given the hardware improvements of the 360 you would give us the option to completely map our controllers as we see fit. But, maybe that's asking a bit much.

I personally like to have the gas/brake on the right joystick whether I'm playing on a Playstation or on my Xbox 360. With the Playstation 3 being way too expensive, I will purchase the next Burnout on Xbox 360. Please, please, please let me be able to map out my controller to my preferences. I speak not only for myself, but for Xbox 360 racing game lovers everywhere. One final thing: you guys ROCK!!! and I can't wait for the new Burnout!

32 year old gamer from Buffalo, New York U.S.A.

Dear Jeffrey,

Thanks for mailing us.

Glad to see you've been with us since the start! Maybe you should get a Gamecube and complete your Burnout collection....

Good question. I think the reason why we left this out is because most players really love the triggers on the Xbox controllers so that's what we use.

We'll keep your comments in mind though when we are finalling our next game!

MORE TRACKS PLEASE!

i am a big fan of your Burnout series. It is the most popular game online... and the only one I play on my 360. My question is are there going to be any downloads for Burnout? Some new tracks would be great. I don't really care about cars because I am a die-hard Revenge Racer. Thank you and keep up the great work

Dear John,

Thanks for mailing The Burnout Team from sunny Florida!

We hope you enjoy racing Sunshine Keys a lot!

Glad to hear you like the game.

To answer your question, there are no plans to offer any more tracks for Burnout Revenge. We are all working on other things now, as you may have read.

We like the Revenge Racer too, that's why we put it at the end of the game. But we also like the new Dolby 5.1 branded 'Oval Racer' and the Xbox 360 branded version of the RR. Both of these cars, and a few more are available are free downloadable content via Xbox Live Marketplace.

SPLIT DECISIONS

Please! Please! Include 4 players split screen for Xbox 360!!

Friends and I get together all the time to play and would love to go against each other in a race but unfortunately your games have only ever had two-player split which is ok but it would be so much better for an arcade racer like Burnout to be 4-player split screen.

Hope it makes it in or I may have to choose a different game.

Thank You

Valued Customer.

Dear Mr. Valued Customer,

We no longer do stuff like split screen or system link. The reason for this is that if you want to play multi-player then the best way to do this is to play online.

It won’t be in the new game. Sorry to disappoint you.
