CRITERION GAMES

THANKS, BUT...

To the amazing coders, designers, artists, leaders, and innovators at Criterion,

I would like to start by saying that what your team has accomplished is by far the most amazing, most revolutionary, and most time-sucking game I have ever seen (and I have played way more than my fair share of other games). I am completely hooked, and I promise to buy Burnout 5 the day it is released. I am a coder myself of some small video game projects, and am pumped about what you are doing for the newest release!

I would like to propose one small (and by small, I mean a very small time commitment to implement) idea for Burnout 5 crashes. I would love to see some of the crashed from the perspective of other cars on the road. To see these cars go screaming by and crashing, just barely missing the vehicle where the camera is.... it would be truly awesome (or perhaps not miss the car, which in that case would be like a life-flash-before-your-eyes moment where half of a car flies into your windshield at 200 mph.).  This could create (and now I'm getting into the realm of infeasibility) a mini-challenge or goal where the object is to get as crash as close to a designated camera car without damaging it. Like a dodging-the-crash slow motion moment, where a minivan gets passed on both sides by pieces of a car that was just cut in half by a semi just ahead, and get some kind of credit for it being more spectacular, like several cars wrecking around and flipping overhead and causing a wreck, but BARELY missing the car. To see this wreck from a bystander's perspective would be super cool.

:D
Even if you don't implement this, I'm still pumped about it!

Your uber-dedicated fan,
John Tibble (Michigan, USA)

Dear John,

Thanks for mailing.

We are in development with the new game. We hope you will like what we are doing. We are sure that you will enjoy the new visual effects.

Note to other writers – PLEASE DO NOT write in to us with your wish-lists and comments for Burnout 5. We designed the game already. All mails of this type just go straight into the bin.

NEXT-GEN SUPPORT

Hi

When I heard the news of Burnout 5 i was like holy **** but then I noticed it was only for Xbox 360 and PS3 and that's a shame. Are you not planning on making it on Xbox because I love the games, or does it mean i'm going to have to buy a Xbox 360 or a PS3 I hope not cause I'm broke.

Please tell me you're going to make it for Xbox?

Cheers,

Matty

Dear Matty,

The new game is being developed for Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360.

VINTAGE RACER

Dear Sirs:

I have a Redline Racer game that my 7 year old twins really enjoy playing, but my computer was recently upgraded to Windows XP and now will not work.

I get an error message that the video card is not installed properly.

Is there a fix for this?

Thanks very much,

Andrew Bill

Wow, that’s an old one.

Click here for instructions for getting the game working under XP, and here to download the patched executable. You will need both.

AGAIN WITH THE DRIFT JUMPING

After playing Burnout Revenge on PS2 and now 360 I have a question that I and many others would like to be answered.

Is drift jumping a glitch or was this programmed into the game like boost starting is?

I have posted a couple of articles on how to drift jump to the websites below.

link 1

link 2

Now ever since I have played Burnout Revenge, drift jumping has always caused quite a stir on many forums with some players saying it is cheating whereas I myself have said this is part of the game. So I would be grateful if you could answer this for me.

May I just say thanks to Criterion for bringing me endless nights of fun whilst playing the burnout series.

Dave (Gamertag IVORBIGUN7)

Dear Dave,

Glad to hear you like the game. As to your letter, we have already written about this in a previous response.

YOU WOULDN'T STEAL A MOVIE

Heeey... I've been playing Burnout since 2001 and first thing first. Love the series and I can't wait till Burnout: X (x being a variable). Let me get to the point. I'm an aspiring programmer and for one of my school projects I wanted to re-create the menu screen. I can manually get everything else, but the one thing I can't get is the video of the yellow car that plays in the background. I was wondering:

1. If I'm allowed to even try to recreate it for a school project;

2. If so, curious if you have that video file just lying around somewhere and;

3. If so, if you can send it to me so that I may make a better program and possibly gain a higher grade.

Thanks,

Phil Cory

Dear Phil,

Sorry we cannot provide our work to you. Nor can we grant permission for you do this. We are very protective of our work.

THEY'LL ALL WANT ONE NOW

We rented “Burnout Revenge” this weekend.  I wasn’t sure if I could ever get my 11 year old son off of first and third person shooter games but Burnout sure did it!  Excellent game!  We both can’t stop playing.  Thank you.

Dear Ed

Thanks for mailing us. Sounds like we can add another fan to our list. We sent you a special gift. Hope you like it.

XBOX 360 VS PS3

Hi,

I am your biggest Burnout fan I cant wait till you bring out Burnout 5. I will be waiting outside the shop at opening time to buy it but there is one question I wanted to ask. Are you going to make it so Xbox 360 players are going to be able to play live with PS3 players on Xbox Live?

PS Keep up the good work. I wish I could be one of those people that test the game out for you when it's developed.

David

Dear David,

Thanks for mailing.

This would be a cool idea wouldn’t it?

Seriously though, this will never happen.

Dear Criterion Developement Team,

I have played the Burnout franchise since Burnout 3. Well, I had just heard about Burnout 5, and think it's cool you're making it for the 360 because I just recently got one. Anyways, Burnout for me has been a lot of fun. One idea I would like to suggest is that you add more cars into the game. I know you probably already thought of this, but how about more muscle type cars? And maybe some more cars like the Etnies Racer in Burnout Revenge. You know, the one with the number 86 on the side. It kind of looks like a stock car.Sorry if this is an idea you guys already thought about.

And it would be cool to have even bigger jumps. Like the ones in some of the crash junctions. Except that you can jump them in races. I'm not saying the jumps aren't big enough already, but it would be really crazy if they were even bigger.

The reason I say you should add bigger jumps is because you have to see the jumps in Midtown Madness 3 for Xbox. It's kind of old, but the jumps were HUGE! You could literally jump on top of buildings.

Well, that's all I have to say.

Burnout Fan,
Eric Gonzalez

Dear Eric,

Thanks for mailing us.

We are big fans of Midtown Madness too, we played the last game on Xbox a lot.

PASS THE POI!

Dear Burnout Team,

OK! You know your Hawaiian Roads! The road to Hana is SCARY! We have the Saddle Road on our Big Island of Hawaii, but it doesn't come even close.

Mahalo for answering my first questions, now comes another. Why can't I use the Yellowcard car in Burnout Revenge? I downloaded it but it does not show in my garage? Is it because you can only have so many cars? Let me know, it's driving me crazy, get it, driving me crazy! Err, never mind.

Aloha Nui Loa,

wickedwahine (gamer tag) :)

PS

It's not Mr. Wahine, Wahine means girl, LOL!

Dear Mr Wahine!

To use the car you have downloaded, you need to unlock this vehicle in the single player progression first.

BLACK ELITE DANGER

Hey there,

I just dropping a line to say I love the game off and online. One thing worries me however, while playing online, with the Black Elite and racing on White Mountain, it seems to crash as you pass the damaged main bridge (keeping in mind this is online not offline) and it's from no-one taking you out, oncoming, etc. It seems to be a problem that increasingly annoys me since it sometimes costs me the race :( I'm not sure if you have to be in 1st position to crash but it does crash for no reason. Can you fix this at all?!

Thanks,
Jessica

Dear Jessica,

Thanks for writing in.

We are aware of this and hope to address it in the near future.

YOU'RE SURROUNDED! OR NOT.

Hi

I am using my PS2, connected with an optical cable to my home theatre system. I have tried the auto-detect feature on th amp, which decodes it as a 2.1 signal. I have since tried manually switching to Dolby Pro-Logic II, and even using the (Sony) receiver’s PL-II music, movie and game decoders, but they all seem to bias the left side. Any help?

Regards
Hugh Dudley

Dear Hugh,

On PS2, the game is compatible with Dolby Pro Logic 2.

We suggest you recheck all of your connections and speaker connections. The audio should not be only from the left side.

THE SOUND OF DISTANT GUNS

Hi,

First of all, great job on the Burnout series and Black. They are all excellent games, with even better audio. This brings me to my question:  I was wondering how the sound team creates it's marvelous audio, more specifically, the explosions. I noticed the explosions in Black are similar to those in Burnout Revenge for the 360. They are incredible, and some of the best explosion sounds I've heard. Were audio libraries used? Self recordings? Could you shed any light on their creation process?

Thanks!
Brian Fieser

Dear Brian,

We will be adding features about the creation of Black onto the site in the next few months. Keep watching for a great ‘making of’ feature of the sound and music for the game.
