BURN-IN CONCERNS

Hi there team,

I would like to ask if there is any on screen display e.g speedometer, position so on and so on, will there be an option to turn it off, as these kind of images can burn-in on some screens through prolonged playing time, as I like to play games for a long period of time, but if the on screen display is transparent then it's not a problem.

Some game developers don't think about this kind of problem, but I've bought some games and had to get rid of them because too much on screen display burns-in and is noticable for days after, which they won't let you turn off.

Just like to say that the whole new thing you have done with Burnout Paradise sounds and looks and I just know it's going to be GREAT.

Thanks for making great games,

QUINTON.

Dear Quinton,

There is no speedo onscreen in Burnout Paradise. In this 'next-gen' era we now find ourselves in, we think that you should be able to work out how fast you are going by what you see and what you hear.

Plus playing Burnout is a much different experience to playing a more simulation based game such as Gran Turismo or Forza. In those games, nailing a specific corner at a specific speed in a specific gear is crucial. Thus, on screen readouts become very important.

And yes, we know all about screen burn-in and have done it loads of times. It usually goes away if you send 'snow', white, or black to the display for a prolonged period of time.

MAKE MY DAY

Hello,

You probably received loads of emails like mine. But is there any possibility to indicate a release date for Burnout Paradise (PS3). This game is one of the main reasons that I bought my PS3, as most games released for it are not touching the capabilities of the PS3.

I hope you can make my day by informing me of a date, or maybe a date for a Demo?

Thanks very much.

Best Regards,

Frank Sijm

Dear Frank,

Thanks for writing in. Sorry we cannot make your day yet. If we wanted to tell everyone the exact date you could all buy Burnout Paradise in the shops, we would.

But we don't have that specifically yet, so we can't answer your question.

DOING A DEMO?

I'm a Burnout fan since Burnout 3 released, now I have PS3 and I'm playing Burnout Dominator on my PSP.

Me, my brother, all my friends and even my wife, plays Burnout. I made them love Burnout.

I wonder if there are any cheats about Burnout Dominator since I finished only 87 percent and even though I keep pushing it hard I can't progress more. And do you plan to release a demo version of Paradise for PS3?

Thanks for this masterpiece! I'll buy Paradise the first day when it's released!!

Get 2 bottles of beer drink and drive agrressively, you'll soon get dizzy!

Burnout! Just fly over!

Sarper Saridal

To answer your question - we just don't know if we'll make a demo yet. We're too busy trying to finish the game. Can't rule it out and can't rule it in.

THREE WISHES

Hey guys at Criterion,

I'm a big fan of Burnout, been playing since Burnout 3 and till now still replaying the game over and over mainly because I love:

Crashing (for points to unlock cars)
Road Rage (Timer free in B:3 the best)
Traffic Checking (timers really suck)

If I had a magic genie that gave me 3 wishes 1 of them would be having my own Burnout Paradise designed to play by my rules (or rather the rules/options that I choose before playing). Specifically below.

Burnout Paradise would have all the features mentioned above plus an option menu to turn on/off things like timers for traffic checking mode.

And since your new game features open world free roam play, is it possible to have options to turn on/off the racing maze (which is gone according to previews and I love) vs. an open street Racing? IGN reviewers were pretty bummed out by choosing a wrong street that took them longer to complete the race and then losing. This could be annoying.

I've read all the reviews and yes you guys are promising a "more liberating game play" but it's all how you view it. If a game is truly liberating it should allow players to choose rules of how their own world of Burnout should be played. It would be even cooler if players like me can configure the game where I can play in Burnout 3, 4 and 5 road rules and customize it any way I want. Now this would really be liberating! As long as players play by the feature you guys have designed, it may "seem liberating" but it's really not. All games have rules and limitations that's why most other games have cheats/codes to unlock special ways to play - as far as I know there has been no such thing for Burnout Series (are there?)

One last thing, Burnout Paradise should have all the modes ever invented from Burnout 1 to 6 plus any new ones you could think off and be able to turn on/off all the features as the player see fits. If this game meets has this kick ass feature I will promise you that I will buy a PS3 with Burnout Paradise in it until the machine melts and Burns!

Good Luck and wish you guys the best- can't wait for the game.

Michael Loh

Dear Michael,

This is the most free and open Burnout you have ever played. We hope you enjoy it.

BEHIND THE SCENES

I just wanted to pass the love on. I adored what the team did with Black.

I was really blown away with the development breakdowns you did on your site. Being an aspiring concept artist those breakdowns are just what the doctor ordered.

Thanks a lot you guys!
Clint Tennant

Dear Clint,

Thamks for writing in. We hope you will like our latest article, Black VFX: Shooting Up The World which details the work that went into creating the amazing visual effects we had in the game.

BURNOUT ON THE Wii?

Hi,

I recently read an article stating that you at Criterion were looking into developing for the Wii console. I just got mine maybe a month back...and since I had a GameCube before, the only Burnout love I get is from Point of Impact, which I pop in every couple days for a few good hours of really sweet music and high speed crashes. I'm sure you wouldn't totally alienate a new system from having any Burnout lovin, after all, Excite Truck paved the way for you guys to do it better on the Wii!

Just can't wait until you decide to bring one of your awesome franchises, preferably Burnout, to the Wii. I've played Burnout 1 and 2 on GameCube, and Takedown and Revenge on the 360 that I used to have until it died a red ring-ish death. It was at that time I decided to go back to Nintendo, and that's where I'm staying. Hopefully you'll bring a game to this sweet platform sometime in the next couple years!

Sincerely,
- Doug

Dear Doug,

Don't know what article you were reading, but we've not said we're working on anything for the Wii. Right now, it is unlikely that something like Burnout Paradise would be developed for this system.

FRIENDLY REQUEST

Hi

I'm Izaak iv emailed you 2 or 3 other times but haven't replied, but i think i sent it wrong. I love your games. iv got burnout 1 that was amzing when i first saw that, bought it for gamecube, it still think its amazing. Then i went round to my mates house and we played burnout 2 i loved, played it all night. So i decided to get a playstation 2 and i got burnout 3 with it. Then i got revenge on ps2 then burnout 2 for ps2. My favourite is burnout 3. Burnout revenge i hated the most. It just didn't have that feel. But i still love it. Then i saw that paradise will be out. I was excited for some crash trailers. It looks amazing. I saw the E3 demo of burnout paradise on my computer, but I didn't see any lorries or buses or anything like that. Are they going to be in the game, even if they're not ill still buy it. One thing though when is the demo expected to be released on xboxlive market place. Please because I keep on looking on the marketplace to look for it. I bet it will be the best racing game of the year. Keep the hard work going. (my gamertag for xbox live is izaak sabo, could you send me a friend request if you have a 360).

Izaak.

Dear Izaak,

Sorry we are unable to send you a friends request - we get so many but we're not able to respond to them. There will be Crash Mode in Burnout Paradise, it's just that it's more of an experience rather than a mode...

BLACK SOUNDTRACK

Hi,

It's a rant of sorts. The music in Black is a brilliant fusion of dramatic war beats and melancholy orchestral passages. Several reviews note it. The opening credits even list the composer individually, so you clearly consider it a big-ish deal.

So why, oh why, is the soundtrack so totally impossible to find? Not in retail, not online, not even pirated on the p2p networks. It's physically impossible to get it ANYWHERE.

I don't see how you can rationalise this Iron Curtain (heh, note the reference. Aren't I clever.) If you don't think it'll make a profit (and fair enough, it might not), why not release them as low-bitrate mp3s on your site? Why not paid downloads? Why not podcasts? There's a zillion no-cost, hassle-free ways of getting music out there, to the extent that every crappy bob Joe myspace band has entire albums up for download - so why can't I go back and enjoy what is, frankly, one of the best game soundtracks I've ever heard?

Please, please, publish the music in some form or another. I just KNOW they're sitting on some office hard-drive, gathering cyberdust. Music this good belongs in the public sphere!

Yours,
Jerome

Dear Jerome,

You can purchase the soundtrack to Black from iTunes. It was published a year or so ago.

LOSE THE LANGUAGE

Black is BY FAR the most AWESOME shooter game ever...except for one thing...

The cursing is so bad, numerous and offensive that I had trouble playing in my home. You see I have three boys who love to game with me. While I do not allow them to play Black or any other "M" rated games, they may, on occasion, be within ear range of this game. I ask only that the next version of Black allows the user to turn the cursing off. Everything else about the game is fantastic and I appreciate you guys inventing it. I love first person shooters more than anything else and Black is by far my most favorite. I thought the Medal of Honor's couldn't be beat, until I bought and played Black.

Please make another one, just add an "off switch" to the cursing.

Thank you for listening to an avid fan who is a guaranteed sale of the next Black for sure! (especially with having the ability to switch off the cursing).

Best regards,
Joe Scott

Dear Joe,

Thanks for your letter. All of the titles are rated and we believe it's up to the consumer to make the right decisions. The game is not appropriate for those below the specified audience.

BURNING PROPHECY

Great job getting those "best racing game" awards on Burnout games :) I'm a huge fan of Burnout. Love the games, the graphics, the soundtrack, and the cars. Can't wait until Paradise comes out. Oh, by the way, I have this one question. In Burnout:Paradise, why did you guys put around 32 cars in the game? Answering it will be appreciated. Thanks =]

Your huge Burnout fan,
-Vaughn

Dear Vaughn,

We chose this number of cars after a magical vision experienced by one of our team. He was standing on the edge of his toilet hanging a clock.

The porcelain was wet. He slipped and hit his head. When he came around, he was struck with a vision. It said "32 cars in Burnout Paradise" so that is what we did.

WHAT ABOUT US?

I saw a couple of letters that you got asking about Burnout on Nintendo consoles. This should show to you that we, the Nintendo fans, the ones you pretend don't exist, would also like some Burnout on our consoles. I would like to personally thank JC for sending the mail that asked about a Wii version of Burnout. You can email me at enjoi_36@hotmail.com because we both love our Wiis and we both love burnout.

Sadly Criterion restricts us to only being able to love one thing at a time. But in case this isn't enough of a hint to you to make US a game for a change, here some comments, none of which were written by me, all of which share my opinion.

"Burnout needs to be released for wii."

"hopefully nintendo fans will get some burnout down the road."

"GT pro is crap on a shelf next to burnout wii."

"all I know is, after playing Excite Truck I really want burnout on the wii."

"I'm not sure if burnout is for the wii but I hope it is because it rocks more than need for speed with all the smashing and crashing."

And I dont know what those Germans are saying, but they seem pretty excited about it too.

Sometimes I can't believe those mails you get from people who do get burnout games who were disappointed with the lack of crash mode in burnout dominator. YOU COMPLAIN BECAUSE YOU MISS ONE MODE IN YOUR PS2 EXLUSIVE GAME!!! We nintendo fans on the other hand have never had the chance to perform a takedown with a gamecube controller. Honestly sony fans, be happy that criterion likes you otherwise I will gladly switch places with you and see how you like not being able to play burnout 3 or revenge. As far as I can see, the only things stopping a wii burnout from happening are graphics and controls. First of all, people don't buy wiis for graphics, they buy them for fun. I dont expect 360 quality visuals on my awesome wii games. Even so, those guys at Retro Studios made Metroid Prime 3 Corruption look pretty sweet with what the wiis got. Oh and its controls are awesome too. If you dont like steering wheel wii remote controls, thats what we have Classic controllers and Gamecube controllers for. Essentially you could just make a Gamecube game on Wii disc and add your oh so precious online play which apparently you think burnout 3 would have sucked without.
Anyway, I will take back and apologize for this entire verbal attack and believe that you actually do like nintendo if you announce a wii version of burnout (paradise or not) by the end of 2008.

p.s. I really dont care about BLACK, only Burnout, but for those other oppressed nintendo fans that do, the geniuses down at nintendo are developing a light gun style controller called the zapper which would feel so cool to shoot stuff with in some sequel to BLACK that you guys might or might not make. Metroid has shown that the wii is where its at for first person shooters.

p.p.s. Out of everyone I know who owns burnout 3 takedown or revenge, none of them even have online to use for they're ps2/xboxes but they love it anyway.

sincerely, Ben

Dear Ben,

Upon receipt of your letter, we immediately starting developing Burnout for the Wii - it featured Burnout 3 and Burnout 4 Revenge) and then you could download Paradise for free off a new special Wii channel.

But then you said that you don't care about Black.

So now we decided not to do it. And we all went home.

The Burnout Team

Ps - we like Nintendo.

ART IMITATES BURNOUT

Dear Team

I am writing to thank you and let you look at my project that is finally complete after several years. I should actually refer to the time scale in hours as I spent literally thousands of them playing your beautiful Burnout 2 game.

My project started with an article in Frieze magazine written by James Roberts in which he stated, "Computer graphics have the authority of the mass produced object: they exist on the television screen, which, in its sense of distance and seamlessness, immediately endows them with the quality of being outside everyday life."

The above in tandem with your Burnout 2 game was the catalyst for my new work-my main ambition for it though was to have a ready made audience of game players who might recognise the images-literally or subliminally-and relate to them.

All the images apart from one started life as a Burnout 2 background - I wonder if you can tell what part of the game they are from?

So far I have sold complete sets to a university a hospital and a New York bank-when the bank asked where they were from-i told them 'car journeys'-a white lie of sorts.

Thanks again, the work does not exist without your game

Kind Regards
David McCracken www.hurricaneeditions.com

Dear David,

Thanks for stealing from our game. Our hired goons are on their way to your front door soon.

NAME THAT TUNE

I was playing Burnout 2 and heard a song I like so went to buy their album and it was the wrong band, I don't know what is wrong with it but I want to know who did a song on the game. The song started out saying you're so cold and that you know then it goes to the chorus where it says dying- shadows or something like it. I know it isn't a great description but I really want to know who played the song. Thanks for your time.

Geoffrey Grant

Dear Geoffrey,

There were no bands in Burnout 2. It was original music written and performed by our in-house guys (and a few session musicians).

Maybe you meant Burnout 3 or Burnout Revenge?

SEARCHING FOR SOUNDTRACK

Is there anywhere I could download the Soundtrack to Airblade?

I've been searching for a while (as you may have guessed) and I can't find it anywhere.

If it's not on the net in a location is there any chance you could send it somewhere or to me?

Please I would really appreciate the soundtrack without having to play the game as I'm a musician myself.

Thanks very much....
J-Man

Dear J-Man,

The soundtrack to Airblade was written by the same guys who did the B2 stuff - see above. It has never been released. Maybe one day.

WHAT A WASTE

I would just like to say that I have tried playing your game Black and it is really bad. I like the action but let's get real. The bad guys are way too many for as hard as they are to kill. My god you have to shoot one guy forever before he dies. I enjoy a challenge but this is ridiculous. Supposed to be a little realistic and come on, nothing could take that many hits from a machine gun and still stand. And then you have so many of them coming at you at once its impossible. I wasted my money on this one. And the shielded guys, what a screw up. They hold up a little shield and it protects them from a hand grenade, come one guys. Get real. Then when they shoot it takes way to much of your life away when my weapons do nothing. What a screwed game.

Richard

Dear Richard,

We have passed your email address to the hundreds of people who write to us every day telling us how much they LOVE the game. A couple of million other gamers might just disagree with you.

Sorry to hear you wasted your money - that must suck - that has NEVER happened to any of us. All the games we buy are AMAZING.

The Black Team

WHY NO BLACK?

A computer-savvy friend of mine guessed that you guys would take a while to do "Black II" because it will take time to learn how to squeeze out every last electron of every processor in the PS3 and you are a bunch of G****** perfectionists. Is that it? I'll keep waiting.

Paul Moos

Dear Paul,

Your computer savvy friend isn't that savvy. We think you should not be friends with him any more. We have lots of other stuff to do first.

Make sure you never speak to him ever again though...

KUDOS

Just started playing BLACK (PS2) Difficult, frustrating....awesome! Best looking game I've ever played on PS2!! I really wish there was an online feature or at least a multi player option. Keep up the great work and let us know if there is another BLACK in the works!!

Dear Matt,

Ask Paul Moos 'computer-savvy friend' (see above) - he seems to be the man when it comes to all things Black Deux.

AND MORE BLACK MAIL...

Hello-

My favorite game is "Black". Are there any others similar to it that you will release soon? I already know that no company makes one like it.

thanks

-una

Dear Criterion
I was just curious. Do you have any plans to release a Black 2? or B2B (back to black).

I (as would a number of my gamer friends) would love to see this.
Thanks for all your great games to-date.

Stephen

Hi There

Can you tell me if a sequel to Black is in the pipeline for the XBOX 360?
